On our third day we woke up early to take the Sita bus to Ravello, a small town south of Positano. It is on the cliffs above Almafi. The bus ride took about 45 minutes but it was a pretty crazy ride. On most corners, the bus would honk several times (in warning) because there is not enough space for other cars to pass simultaneously. On other occasions, cars would have to reverse to let the bus pass along the narrow roads. With all of this madness, I got rather car sick and was relieved to get off the bus at Almafi. From Almafi we took another bus up to Ravello where we went to Villa Ruffalo and Villa Cimbrone.
Villa Ruffafo is an old Italian Villa that sits up on the cliff overlooking the Mediterranean. We were able to walk though the old ruins. They have restored much of it so that it is now used as an entertainment venue for musical performances.
From there we walked over to Villa Cimbrone. It has been converted to a hotel and restaurant but we went to go look at the gardens. Whether it is true or not, we heard that an Englishman lost his wife and heartbroken, he moved to Villa Cimbrone. Around the grounds we found two very sad poems etched into stone, both in english.
"Lost to a world in which I crave no part
I sit alone and commune with my heart
Pleased with my little corner of the earth
Glad that I came not sorry to depart"
After lunch we made our way back down to Almafi via bus. We were able to walk around the different shops. Earlier that day I was trying to take a picture and my camera said "Error CF" which was my compact flash memory card. I of course freaked out because its my dad's nice camera. So I left it at home and was convinced that the whole camera was toast, that the new CF card would be a billion dollars and that we would buy a billion dollar CF card and it would not work and we would not be able to return it. But as we were walking along we saw a camera shop and it sold a similar card so we bought one. And as soon as I got back I put it in and it worked!!!! So this is just one example of my neuroticism that I begin to notice more and more as I travel. For example, on the flight over, I became convinced that Lufthansa would not let me bring my backpack on board. Another time, I became convinced that my backpack was too big to be considered a carry on. I also make sure that I am more than 20 minutes early to every ferry boat ride and flight terminal.
Well anyways, this is a bunch of garbage that I just threw at you. Sorry there are no images to go with it. I tried to pull up two pictures while I was in the shower and not one loaded, so I think the internet is slow. We are in a little hotel in the rather sketchy area near the train station in Salerno. We leave for Switzerland at 6:02 am tomorrow and have a long day of traveling.
